On the 13th of October, 2022 Kigezi high school witnessed a landmark achievement; the Launch of Kigezi High School’s online Learning Management System. The event that took place at the school premises in the school Library was graced by the Kabale University Vice Chancellor represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Finance and Administration, Anny Katabaazi Bwengye(Mrs), Canon Henry Turyagyenda the Chairman Board of Governors (Kigezi High School), Mr. Abraham Akampurira the Head Teacher of Kigezi High School, some University and school’s staff.
In his speech, Mr. Abraham Akampurira the Head Teacher thanked Kabale University for including Kigezi High School in its community engagement program. He was very optimistic that Kigezi High School will now be able to move to glory in the area of academics.
Abraham said the ELMS will help and aid in teaching and learning, that is both in and off session, improve the collaboration of staff across the teaching profession and also easily bring parents on board in regard to embracing school programs.
Mr. Akampurira also cited possible areas where the school can benefit while still in partnership with the University, citing Human capital development, career guidance and counseling, and partnering in project proposal writing for financial grants and support. ‘We are grateful to partner with Kabale University in this area of human capital development. Among others, he expressed how they are willing to engage with the school through professional advisory services, and systems development among others.
The University Assistant Director for ICT services Mr. Jones Murangira said this is the pioneer project of supporting the high schools in the University’s location. The future plan is to roll the programme out to support many other schools. He added that this eLearning Management System is going to support continuous teaching and learning for both for teachers and students and it should be well utilised during the school term and during the holidays.
The system was initiated by Canon Henry Turyagyenda and the Director ICT KAB in accordance with section 1.2 sub-section 33 of the KAB ICT policy which provides that, the ICT department will provide skills to surrounding communities including youth, women, teachers etc.
On behalf of the Board of Governors for the school, the School Chairman for the Board Canon Henry Turyagyenda commended the great partnership with Kabale University and applauded the University for following the policies, especially the policy of community engagement. He said that the University has always made it a point to contribute to the development of the community in which it is embedded.
Turyagenda submitted that because Kabale University had chosen Kigezi High school to pioneer this support the staff and students should be encouraged to embrace digital learning and strive to be leaders in the whole of the Kigezi Sub-Region. He added that many more schools will be able to learn from it. “many other schools should be able to learn from you. Try to make Kigezi High School a leading school in that area” Canon Henry Turyagenda.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor of Finance and Administration Ms Anny Katabaazi who represented the Vice Chancellor expressed her appreciation for this partnership. Mrs Katabaazi said, that the University is willing to partner with Kigezi High School in more areas such as Career Guidance.
She also encouraged Kigezi High School members to consider having KAB as its first choice when it comes to higher learning choices. The event was attended by 49 teaching staff of Kigezi High school and 43 students plus some Kabale university staff.
